Things to know before you start a Business

Before you throw your retirement, inherited money, your savings or whatever you have into the idea of starting a business; make sure that you cover the following basics:

Have a purpose

Define a purpose for your business. Many people have sole purpose of making money, after all who does not need money? This however, is not a good enough reason to get into business. There are many other ways to get money than getting into business. Besides, everyone knows you need money, but to your customers nothing matters more than fulfilling their own needs. Neither your hard work and nor your drive to make money will make them do business with you; but your ability to make them feel like winners. Until you have a plan to make people feel like winners, you have no sustainable business idea.

So, find out why you are getting into business, what you want from it and what your customers will gain from doing business with you. All this have to be clearly sorted out before you spent your startup money, otherwise the chance of loosing your money is greater than you can imagine. If you have doubt or things are not clear, hold off a little longer until you fully understand what you are doing and the consequences thereof. If you must proceed with some key issues not being clear then do so with caution.

Know who your customers are

Try to define your customers as accurately as possible and do a thorough study of your potential customers’ needs and buying patterns before you develop a product or service.

Most business ideas are easy to replicate by potential competitors, figure out how you are going to be different from any competition out there. What is it that will pull customers from your competitors? In other words what is unique about your business and how does your uniqueness benefit your customers?

NOTE: Customers are key to every business, the happier they are the more likely are likely to keep a business relationship with you.

If and when you decide to be in business, beware that things are likely to get worse before they get better. You could end up being deep into debt before you see any profits. Ask yourself this: Do I have a stomach for all the stress and discomfort that comes with owning a business? Can I keep going when all forces seem to be against me or do I easily give in?

Another word of advice, there are probably thousands of successful business people around you or that you have heard of. You have heard about how much money they make and the luxury lives they lead. Your head is probably ticking with all the noise you have heard about making money and now you have high hopes of making millions quick. I hate to tell you that you probably have not heard the whole story, the sleepless nights and all the stress that led to that success, or how long it has taken them to get to where they are. So, be prepared things are not going to happen over night and be prepared to work hard and wait… it could be a long time before you get there. If you are persistent enough, you will get there and on your own terms.
