Avoid being flashy with lots of graphics


While the internet technology has evolved immensely, using too many flash animations, images and videos distracts your visitors. You may want to keep those to the minimum. Also unless you are sure that all your potential customers have high-speed internet connections, too many images and videos will cause your page to load slower than text-based pages. Most customers do not like waiting for your page to load and will click away without even looking at what you have. Besides, there are other hundreds of people who may offer the same products and services at faster loading speeds. Everything counts when it comes to marketing on the internet, so do not push yourself out of the competition, Keep it simple and to the point.

Only focusing on the purchase activity



The old way of doing business was that you get in as many customers as you can, they purchase and go away and what they do after that is none of your business. In a highly competitive business world, that approach is an equivalent of committing business suicide. People want to feel a sense of belonging and until your business starts offering that in addition to the purchasing activity, you can forget about loyalty. As the old saying goes "It is always costly to acquire new customers than it is to satisfy existing ones".



Not using a customer database



This one goes hand-in-hand with the one above. If you do not collect customer contact information, how are you supposed to contact them and let them know about your new offerings? Most merchants, especially new business owners neglect this and only to regret it. As soon as you start doing business online, develop a mechanism for keeping in touch with your customers and if possible take interest in things they do, so that you can know how to help them. However, you can not do this until you have a mechanism of keeping records of your contacts and the communication between your business and your customers. Beware though, of spamming (Never send unsolicited offerings to people who have never agreed to receive them) not only is it illegal, but many also find the practice offensive.

Counting hits instead of conversion and sales


There are many people out there who boast about getting so many hits per day. The ugly truth about internet marketing is that hits mean nothing if you can not get customers/visitors to perform the action you would like them to. If you were selling something, the goal is to convert a high number of visitors to buyers, if you can not get them to do that, thousands of hits are worth nothing. You are better off spending your money on something else than drawing unqualified traffic.
