Securing your website is critical if you intent to keep customer data or any sensitive information behind the website interface. Remember than the internet is simply a set of interconnected networks, thus it is vulnerable to attacks. If you keep any sensitive information about your customers, then you have the responsibility of safeguarding that such information does not end up in wrong hands or in the hands or people who could use it to inflict losses or injuries on your customers.

Securing your information cannot be entrusted entirely to software applications. Even though there are good software applications out there to help protect you from hackers and malicious programs, you will still have to combine human effort and software capabilities to ensure that your data is secured.

Here are some of the things you could do to secure your website and customer data:

Develop an internet security policy, make sure there are clear instructions and procedure for what can be downloaded, blocked, and be uploaded on your web server. It also helps to put in place guidelines for dealing with an attack when it occurs, things such as who to contact, how soon to close off the connection to the public, how to contact consumers whose data had been compromised and so forth.
Never put too many unnecessary software on your web server or grand unlimited access to other vendors without being sure how secure their networks are.
Do not download software from the internet if you are not confident in the source, lots of software that you can download freely may damage or compromise the security of your network.
Be vigilant, security issues change on a daily basis, make sure your security software is up to date
If you have access to logs, check them frequently to see if there are any suspicious activities happening behind the scenes.

Always restrict access to certain parts of your website. Unless that component has publicly available data, no one without appropriate access privileges should access it.
