Viral Marketing on the internet


Viral marketing is really just another word for "online word of mouth". This is based on the notion that if your offering is good and such information gets in the hand of customers, each one of them will tell their friends who will then tell their friends; and the word spreads like wild fire. That kind of marketing only works well if the offering is very different from what is on the market and opinion leaders want to somehow be associated with it.

Viral marketing also works well when something free is involved, otherwise there has to be an incentive to reward people who inform their friends about the offering. Viral marketing is also effective with content that is relevant to a lot of people and for content or offering whose benefits are easy to communicate.

However, incentive-based viral marketing can easily get out of hand and before you know it, you will have a countless number of spamming incidents by people trying to benefit by informing people they do not know in order to enhance their benefits.

Among the most effective methods of viral marketing is creating compelling content and allowing people to quote and redistribute. This is popularly seen with YOU TUBE videos and other contents circulating on the internet and word about them spreading like wild fire. You should also be aware that linking, instead of people just passing on the word, it is more effective if people quote; write reviews of your offering and put a link on their sites taking people back to the original content.
