Characteristics of effective leaders

Talk of leadership, the first thing that comes to most people's mind is an image of some political leader. While politicians are the most common leaders in any society, we actually have more leaders from all walks of life than we do political leaders. We see these leaders in our places of worship, our homes, schools, places of work and so forth.
Generally speaking, almost every leader starts off as a follower, but these are not your ordinary followers. These are people who follow intelligently and seek opportunity to acquire knowledge from people they follow. If you study the history of the most powerful men and women to have walked the face of earth, you are likely to find three traits of leadership. One being highly intelligent and inspiring leaders, two being highly intelligent, but insecure leaders, and then you get the ineffective leaders with lack of vision. We will explore each trait later, but for now we will cover some characteristics of effective and inspiring leaders.
- Self-control - any person who can not control him/her self can not be expected to control others. The old saying "Do as I do" applies to leadership and gives intelligent followers something to emulate.
- Strong sense of courage - A person of great courage portrays self-confidence. No one will follow a leader that lacks confidence and if they do, it won’t be for too long. A leader who weavers in his/her decisions, shows that he or she is not sure of him/her self. Effective leaders are decisive and yet have a keen sense of justice for all their followers
- Willingness to assume responsibilities for their followers - Effective leaders are willing to concede mistakes and failures and assume the responsibilities of those who follow them. Resort to pointing fingers and blaming; you will sure to loose your followers in no time. A leader bears the responsibility of doing more than he/she requires of his/her followers, this means paying attention to detail too. Effective leaders are never to busy to pay attention to what their followers are doing, and delegate intelligently.
- Pleasant personality - this one goes with self-control and self-respect. People can hardly follow anyone who does not grade high on the above mentioned characteristics and respect of others (peers and followers, no matter what their level is).
