Software project management activities

• Feasibility study - This involves a thorough investigation into whether the project is worth undertaking. Here you will consider the development and operational costs, estimated benefits, risks associated with the project and so forth



• Planning - Once you have established that the project is worth pursuing, you then engage the second phase. Plotting and planning how the project will be carried out, what will be needed, where to source resources required to complete the project, who will do what and at what time? You have to be careful at this point not to go into too many fine details because things are likely to change. Stick to the outline for now, but make it as detailed as possible especially when it comes to the earlier stages.



• Project execution - once you are satisfied with the plan and can source the resources required for the early stages, you can start the project. This stage will include things like; requirements gathering and analysis, documenting details of what the system ought to do. Once that is done, you can start coding, and at every increment verify that the software is doing what the users wanted. At the end, you do a thorough testing of the software, train users how to use it and then deploy or install the software for productive use.


This is when the development project ends, from here on; maintenance and support kicks in. This involves routine updates, changes to the software to keep up with the changes in the business model that the software serves.
