Software project management problems

The biggest problem with software project management is usually in deciding what problems the project ought to address. In other words, it is in deciding what is in and what is out. I have personally seen projects that start by addressing a set of issues and ends up doing a lot more than they were intended to achieve. Some run out of resources and stretch their resources beyond optimal capacity, thus ends up taking a lot longer than anticipated. Other issues that are commonly experienced by management are:
  • poor role definition. It is not clear as to who does what?

  • lack of standards

  • incorrect or unclear success criteria. Not knowing when you have hit your final destination is almost as fatal as not knowing where to go. When you have no clear idea of what the final project outcome would look like, you can never know when to stop.

  • poor planning or resource and cost estimates.

Other general software project management problems include:
  • inadequate specifications of the work

  • Inadequate knowledge or resources to carryout the project

  • Poor communication among stakeholders

  • Lack of dedicated resources to the project

  • Overlooking critical aspects due to deadline pressure

  • Poor or lack of quality control

  • Lack of commitment by either people who initiate the project or people that are expected to work on the project.
