Fractions - Basics
|
A fraction is defined to be "a component or part of a whole".
For example,
The square above is cut into two components, thus the shaded boxes represent 2 boxes of a whole (4).
In terms of Fraction, this can be presented as :
| => | 2 ___ 4 |
| Also represented as : |
| => | 1 ___ 2 |
Another example,
The square above is cut into two components, thus the shaded boxes represent 3 boxes of a whole (4).
In terms of Fraction, this can be presented as :
By definition, fractions consist of two numbers. The top number is called the numerator. The bottom number is called the denominator.
numerator

denominator
To add two fractions with the same denominator, add the numerators and place that sum over the common denominator.
To Add fractions with different denominators:
Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) of the fractions
Rename the fractions to have the LCD
Add the numerators of the fractions and simplify
Example: Find the Sum of 1/5 and 1/3
First we have to find the lowest common denominator, which in this case is the lowest number that is evenly divisble by both 3 and 5.
One of the ways to do this is to list multiples of each number and then pick the smallest number that is in both sets of numbers
For example for 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21,24,...
For 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25,...
As you can see from the numbers above, 15 is the smallest common number in the two sets of numbers, thus it is the lowest common Denominator (LCD).
Rename the old denominator to the new Common denominator, which in this case is 15.
To add the two numbers, You take LCD, devide it by the first denominator and then multiply by the first numerator, then do the same with the second number.
This will produce : ((15/5) x 1) = 3 and the second number will be ((15/3) x 1) = 5
Thus (3 + 5)/15, which can be simplified to 8/15
