What is the Internet?


The Internet" refers to the worldwide network of interconnected computers, that use a common protocol known as TCP/IP to communicate with each other. Every personal computer, web server, cell phone or other device that people use to look at websites; websites themselves are part of the Internet.

The Acronym/Abbreviation www stands for World-wide web. This is used to refer to all publicly accessible websites and other information, including FTP sites. The use of www, is more useful to the web browsers used to access the information from a web server. What happens when you type the website address in the browser, the browser uses a language or protocol called http which stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol to speak to the web server that hosts the content and then return the page results to the user. Today, you have technology that enable people to shorten url in a way that people do not have to see the www in their address bar, but instead the technology does all the work in the back end. Examples of this are sites such as Twitter that only display http://twitter.com/ n the address bar.

What are Search Engines?


Search engines are interfaces that scouts and indexes pages on the internet in order to make it easy for people to find information on the internet. In the old days, indexing used to be manually entered by a person, but technology has evolved to an extent that search engines are now using automated programs or spiders to crawl all over the internet, collecting information from publicly available websites and store them in databases for use by their search users.

Typically, when somebody looks for information on the internet, they type in a few keywords for what they want, these interfaces then go through their indexed content to find any page with content related to what the user typed in.

Examples of search engines are Google, Yahoo, Bing and there are many others.

What is a website?


A website is a collection of related pages, usually managed by a single person or a single organization. Every website is distinguished from others by a domain name. A domain name serves as that person or organization's registered name on the internet. One person can have multiple domain names and websites, but you can not have two different websites using the same name.

What does it mean to upload and Download?


The term upload refers to putting the data on the server from a local device. This could be moving data files from a computer to a web server or sending images over the internet to other destinations. In general you are talking about putting content from your local device onto the World Wide Web.


Downloading is the opposite of uploading. This refers to taking or copying the content from the World Wide Web onto your local device. Example of these is copying of publicly available site contents, music and other media from the Internet to your device.

What does FTP mean?


The term FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol. This is among the popular and oldest ways of transferring files over the Internet. Today, FTP is among the most popular ways to download or upload large files.
